Join Cumbe's Dunham Jazz Performance Workshop!

A Community Dance Group Open to Dancers of All Levels

Dunham Jazz Performance Workshop is a special class and choreography series open to community dancers of all levels culminating into a live concert-staged performance presented by Cumbe with the option to perform at Cumbe socials and locally produced community events.

Please note that this choreography workshop is an extension of the Dunham-Informed Jazz Technique class at Cumbe. 

Class Description: Inspired by the work of Katherine Dunham, dancers will explore Dunham's movement vocabulary often used in Jazz dance, traditional modern Jazz motifs, as well as vernacular jazz movement and experiment with the three to ultimately train and strengthen the body for a concert Jazz dance movement aesthetic.  For each meeting, a classic Dunham warm-up will be given followed by lively, Dunham-inspired Jazz progressions.  The final hour of each class will be reserved for choreography creation, ultimately building a concert dance piece.   Class is open and embraces all levels, yet challenging enough for students who haven't danced for many years in a fun, freeing, and supportive environment.  

Perform with Cumbe.  All Are Welcome.

This is a no stress, adult beginning jazz class focusing on the fundamentals of Jazz and traditional jazz movement vocabulary.  Class includes full warm-up, foot and leg exercises, abs, stretch, progressions across the floor, turns, and leaps, and a whole lot of fun.  Great for dancers getting over injuries, hip hop and break-dancers looking to refine skills, and adults getting back into dance after a long siesta!  The ab work alone is worth the price of admission……. 	INT/ADV Jazz Technique Classes with Candice! This is an intermediate/advance jazz class designed to improve strength, flexibility, and overall technique.  Class includes full warm-up, isolations, leg and foot work, flexibility stretching, extensive ab exercises, contractions, pelvic hinges, progressions across the floor, jazz styling, turns, traveling turns, jumps and leaps.  This class is excellent for those trying to focus only on their technique and not worry about learning a lot of choreography. For those who want to learn a challenging routine, dancers can also stay the following hour for the combination session.  Combos can be anything from Jazz Ain’t Dead repertory to Candice’s signature fast and furious club banger style, to big band, hard rock, and classical jazz, to a contemporary pop/lyrical jazz, an Afro Cuban style, or a soulful r&B. Once again, I will be returning to the Joffrey Ballet School Jazz and Contemporary Summer Dance Intensive 2014!  I will be teaching almost everyday July 28 – August 15.  Auditions for my piece will be at 4pm on Monday, July 28.  I’m looking forward to a great summer of fun, creativity, passion, and dance.  I can’t wait to see my old students and make new friends…..

Master Class Recap: Next Step Dance Studio Milwaukee

On Tuesday, July 1, I was in Milwaukee and taught two master classes for four hours at the beautiful school, Next Step Dance Studio, one class to the young dancers and one class to the teens.  This school is run by Terri Sinani who is doing an awesome job with her students.

Candice Teaching This Summer in Vancouver, Canada!

 

I’m so excited to be guest teaching in Vancouver, B.C. Canada this summer at one of Vancouver’s finest ballet conservatories, Pro Arté Centre!  I can’t wait to see these beautiful dancers in action.  I will be teaching August 27 – 29 three classes of day of various levels of lyrical and jazz.  Hope to see you there!

On Tuesday, June 24, 2014, I taught a 6 hour Jazz workshop and three routines of contrasting styles to the beautiful students at Wyckoff School of Dance.  It was a long day and a lot of material, but the students were remarkable, so well behaved and attentive, and were just an absolute joy to teach.  A lot of talent in the room…  I can’t wait to see you all again soon!  -Much happiness………
